STI / Parasim History

Systems Technology, Inc. is a small, employee-owned research and development company located in Hawthorne, California. Founded in 1957 to study the behavior of dynamic systems, including ground and aerospace vehicles, and the human operators attempting to control them, STI has become an internationally-recognized center of expertise. As a prime contractor to the U. S. Government and a consultant to industry, STI has accomplished several hundred research and development programs in vehicle dynamics (air, space, ground, and sea), manual and automatic vehicular guidance and control systems, handling and flying qualities, control and stability theory, human operator dynamics, human subsystem dynamics, operator impairment, and associated topics. STI’s PARASIM® parachute flight training simulator was conceived over 20 years ago, in response to the US Forestry Service Smoke jumpers’ need for a better training solution. Actual training jumps were costly and injuries were common, but if training jumps were reduced, there were even worse injuries when the Smoke jumpers had to jump into fire zones! PARASIM® was the solution!

By providing a safe, effective means of training parachuting skills on the ground, PARASIM® lets jumpers learn canopy control skills, navigation, collision avoidance, and critical equipment malfunctions procedures, and practice these skills until they become second nature. When the USFS adopted PARASIM®, injury rates dropped dramatically!

STI has been improving and enhancing PARASIM® ever since, as computer and graphics technology has advanced and military and civilian jumpers have given us crucial feedback on their training needs. This patented technology helps train aircrew for emergency bailout and ejection, and allows airborne personnel to practice the critical skills they need to effectively complete their parachute missions. Over 300 systems are in service in the US and around the world.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. What is PARASIM®?
A.
PARASIM is a virtual reality parachute simulation system, designed and sold by Systems Technology, Inc. This patented system uses a PC computer and head mounted display, along with specially instrumented controls and proprietary software, to teach parachuting skills while the student is safely on the ground.

Q. What parachutes does PARASIM® support?
A.
PARASIM® includes a variety of both round and ram-air canopies, including most of the US military canopies currently in service (MT1X, MC4, MC5, C9, SF10A and many more!). New canopies can also be added - ask us about our custom modeling services!

Q. How does Virtual Reality help in parachute training?
A.
Suspended in an actual parachute harness and wearing an advanced head-mounted display and head position tracker, the jumper is immersed in a computer-generated 3D environment. As the jumper uses the canopy controls, the virtual parachute responds just as a real canopy would. The richly detailed simulation scenes create the sensation of moving in a 3D world, and provide critical landing cues. The jumper can observe the canopy overhead and learn to recognize and properly respond to equipment malfunctions.

Q. Who uses PARASIM®?
A.
PARASIM® is in use around the world by Military Airborne units, Smokejumpers, Aviation Physiology and Life Support units, sports jumpers, museums and other educational exhibitions. Our customers in the US include the Air Force, Army, Navy, Air National Guard, Special Operations Forces, Forestry Service, and the Bureau of Land Management.

Q. What scenes does PARASIM® include?
A.
PARASIM® ships with a variety of scenes, including several based on real-world locations. Different types of terrain and environments are represented, from forested mountains to barren desert, and even an aircraft carrier at sea.

Q. Can I get my own DZ created in PARASIM®?
A.
Yes! STI can create a custom DZ from customer-provided terrain data and imagery. Contact us for more information.
